Law of Fashion https://www.law-of-fashion.com Fri, 22 Apr 2022 08:16:57 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=7.1.3 Dezso does Dallas https://www.law-of-fashion.com/dezso-does-dallas/ Wed, 23 Apr 2014 07:25:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=40 A little heads up that the fabulous stylist turned jewelry designer Sara Beltran of Dezso is making a personal appearance here in the Big D at Forty Five Ten (where else) as a part of the Dezso trunk show there.  She will be at Forty Five Ten today and tomorrow hanging out and showing you what she’s got in store for her beachy chic line.  Personally, I love her earthy take on the friendship bracelet. Something about her color choices and the addition of the handpicked shells just makes it seem more relevant. Be sure and stop by and see her if you can!

MY UNIFORM…AGAIN https://www.law-of-fashion.com/my-uniformagain/ Wed, 22 Jan 2014 10:17:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=30 Last night I was chatting with Amy about what we were going to wear tonight to our event at Blushington (stop everything and RSVP if you haven’t! See you there!) and my response was, “Let’s be honest, I’ll probably end up in a button-down, leather leggings or jeans and a pair of heels.” And while I have yet to make the final decision, I can almost guarantee you that it will be some variation on the above. If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times: I have a uniform. While I pride myself on being willing to wear just about anything (seriously, the more fabric, prints and garments the better), when given the choice or forced to go out, I always revert to old faithful. Perhaps it is how comfortable these faux leather leggings are (at under $100 a pop, they get confused for the real deal all the time), or maybe I lose my creativity when I don’t have a “reason” to get dolled up. Whatever the case may be, sometimes a girl just wants to wear something she already knows looks good.

DESIGNER PACKAGES COURTESY OF WRAPPED LA https://www.law-of-fashion.com/designer-packages-courtesy-of-wrapped-la/ Wed, 13 Nov 2013 09:49:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=23 I am a big time gift giver.  There is nothing I love more than going out to find someone the perfect present (which sometimes means spending more than previously agreed upon) and wrapping it up perfectly for it’s intended recipient (mostly because it looks nice under my tree).  However, finding the gift is one thing, but finding quality wrapping paper is an art in and of itself.  I have had my fair share of luck with vintage papers and have even been known to wrap packages in leftover wallpaper samples (yep, it’s amazing), all with the hope of finding a beautiful, thick paper that is noticeable on it’s own.  You know, the gift you don’t want to open?

Recently, a friend of mine (Mary from A Fab Life) introduced me to Wrapped LA and their insane line of papers (that are actually made for wrapping, as opposed to the wallpaper I have been using).  Wrapped’s entire premise is that wrapping paper should be a work of art (preach!), which inspired prints from paint splattered floors to exotic animal hides (the zebra is a personal favorite).  If you have time you should head to their blog to read about their design process.  The whole concept is pretty amazing.

Anywho, Wrapped LA is currently hosting a holiday pop-up in Nordstrom (through November 15) where you can get your hands on their assortment of gift bags, boxes, gift tags, a wide assortment of papers, animal print notebooks (for all of the gift tracking) and file folders (for all of the receipt holding). Personally, I am fully stocked with both holiday themed and designer papers and am ready for some gift-giving action.  Now if only I knew what to put inside…

What’s your thing? https://www.law-of-fashion.com/whats-your-thing/ Mon, 08 Apr 2013 07:28:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=43 There is a common theme in the conversations I have with people about their careers – they are unhappy, dissatisfied and not sure what to do about it. At the end of each of these conversations, we always come to the same conclusion: They need a thing.

You see, everyone needs a thing. Having a demanding career and spending the majority of your week working in an office can take its toll if you let it.  Hell, forget the demanding career, life will take its toll if you let it. Which is why, despite all of our best efforts to forget ourselves and focus on everything around us, we have to make sure we have a thing. You know, something you do only for you.  Something that is not materialistic. Something you can stop and do no matter your financial situation or where you are  in life.  It should be something that makes you feel good about yourself and gives you a sense of accomplishment. Something that is all yours. Something you have absolute control over.

One of my friends, after battling his own sense of discontent with the state of his life, recently took up running. In ten weeks, he is now running half marathons and has never been happier. In his words, “I am in a really good place.” His state of mind did a complete 180, and yet nothing in his life had changed. That is, nothing apart from his decision to start focusing a part of his week on himself, on something he wanted to do.

Running is so not my thing (clearly). I am not an artist, a photographer, a weight lifter or a golfer. And despite all evidence to the contrary, posting ridiculous images of myself all over the internet isn’t it either. My thing has always been writing. And as seems to be the universal case, I lost sight of my love for jotting down my thoughts (and, more importantly, all it did for me mentally) when I first started working. I struggled to find balance between my life and career and to find some place where “Lynsey” wasn’t synonymous with “attorney.” I searched for an outlet for about a year before I found my way back. My view on life, my career, and even Los Angeles has been better for it. It is amazing what a little self purpose can do.

So what is your thing? What do you do to focus on yourself in the midst of the craziness that is life? If you don’t have a thing and you have yet to discover what your outlet is, I challenge you to find, and more importantly commit to, one as soon as possible. I promise you will be better for it.

Climate Change https://www.law-of-fashion.com/climate-change/ Wed, 03 Apr 2013 07:53:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=49 I have been doing some work traveling recently, which always requires a little climate inspired wardrobe reconsideration.  Add a blazer here, lose a sandal there. Even though Los Angeles is in a somewhat constant (albeit a fluctuating constant – you do the math) state of spring/summer, it appears that April in other parts of the country doesn’t necessarily translate to bright colors and short sleeves. Go figure. Now this is not to say I am opposed to breaking out the jackets and booties (some of which never saw the light of day this winter because I missed my yearly sojourn to NYC). I’m not. In fact, it’s nice to get a little change of scenery and battle a chill in the air. My constitution needed it.

Double breasted https://www.law-of-fashion.com/double-breasted/ Wed, 06 Mar 2013 07:38:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=46 There is something inherently sophisticated about a double-breasted blazer.  More popular for men than they ever have been for women (think 1930′s power players and old boys club smoking lounges), perhaps it is the more recent focus on androgynous style that has me thinking about the old world suiting.  Oh how the times (and my style) have changed…

In monochrome suits or in the form of over-sized coats, I love the put-together look of it all.  Power women who are power professionals in power…suits.  Thus, my continued obsession with shaking up work wear has brought me to this – overlapping fabric, multiple buttons and double-breasted construction.  But it doesn’t appear that I am the only one – everyone from Miroslava Duma to Hanneli seems to be dipping their toe in the double-breasted pool.

And last and most certainly the least, there’s this bozo.  You see, this isn’t just preaching but practice my friends. In a vintage Dior blazer that I would chalk up as perhaps my most prized under-priced find, my obsession comes full circle.  Happy suiting.

Getting Graphic https://www.law-of-fashion.com/getting-graphic/ Tue, 25 Sep 2012 09:36:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=20 Talk about taking corporate style to the streets.  Remember that whole vintage (or not-so-vintage as the Balenciaga case may be) t-shirt and pencil skirt look (here and here)?  Turns out, it’s a full on “thing.”  While my corporate thoughts remain the same, having been inspired and adopting the theory that a blazer cures all business casual sartorial evils, I am experimenting today at the office.

FASHION EDITORIAL: WORKING WOMAN https://www.law-of-fashion.com/fashion-editorial-working-woman/ Thu, 12 Apr 2012 10:02:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=26 The first thing that struck me about this editorial from Vogue Latin America was the office itself.  Thank goodness mine looks NOTHING like this.  Although, I have heard rumors that there are still many low-light, dark wood, retro spaces out there.  And since today is the today we normally take a look around “fashionable” offices, I thought it might be interesting to take a look around a not-so-fashionable one, save for the models in it.  So in the vein of “What Not to Wear,” here is “Where Not to Work.”  That being said, the editorial is also good for some killer corporate outfit inspiration, if you are into that sort of thing.

holiday [halloween costume idea: the gold digger] https://www.law-of-fashion.com/holiday-halloween-costume-idea-the-gold-digger/ Thu, 20 Oct 2011 07:17:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=35 So Halloween is right around the corner and it is time to start getting your costume together.  I wish I could take complete credit for this one, but alas, I can’t.  A friend of mine came up with this Gold Digger fabulousness. However, I did dress myself up according to her instructions last year.  And it was hilarious.  In fact, I even won the office costume contest…not that that was incredibly hard to do considering I was one of about ten loon’s who chose to dress up…  So no promises that you are going to win any costume contests (although it is possible), but definitely a promise that people are going to laugh at you.  Including me. I’m already laughing.

Anyway, not only is this costume hilarious and, dare I say it, witty (get it: you are wearing gold and you have a shovel = gold digger!), the best part is that most of it can be found in your (or someone you know’s) closet.  Once you put on all the gold you can find in your closet, all you need to locate are some gold tights (here or here) and you are in the money…literally.

Start digging, lady…

office no, no…or yes? [bare arms] https://www.law-of-fashion.com/office-no-no-or-yes-bare-arms/ Wed, 03 Aug 2011 09:13:00 +0000 https://www.law-of-fashion.com/?p=10 While I love summer weather and I love being outside, I pretty much hate dressing for the office in the summer.  There are a couple of reasons:  First, the weather outside versus the temperature in the office reminds me of being in school again.  You want to wear shorts because it is hot as Hades outside, but because it is so hot outside the building is running the air conditioning so you are working in a freezer, thereby causing you to need a sweater…or eight.   So now you are running around the office in shorts….and eight sweaters.  Which never worked for anyone.

It is a lose, lose situation.

{dress: handmade in Indonesia and picked up while in Bali; faux leather vest: BP; booties: Cynthia Vincent; messenger: Prada; bracelets: F21 and vintage}

Second reason?  I will admit it.  I am a fall/winter kind of girl.  There is nothing I love more than piling on as much of the clothing I have in my closet at one single time.  Bag lady chic, I like to call it.

I am sure the hus wants to die for as many times as the words “I really need more sweaters” have come out of my mouth.  I lurv layering.  Point being?  Summer dressing is just plain miserable for me because I always want to put on something else.  And that something else is usually an over-sized, double weight, furry, fuzzy, weigh-you-down and warm-you-up, angora sweater.

You starting to see the problem?

And the last and FINAL problem with summer office dressing?  You guessed it.  The flippin’ dress code.  Which brings me to my point with all this.  I vividly remember working in my father’s office when I was fourteen for a week one summer, and getting scolded by one of his colleagues for wearing a sleeveless shirt.  “You have to dress professionally here.”  So, for the rest of my life, it has been clear to me that sleeveless garments were a no, no at the office.

Until recently….

I have seen women of all types (assistants, associates, managers, partners,  etc.) running around the CC office park with naked arms out for all of world to gawk at.  Exposed.  Granted, they all are doing it in classic Banana Republic shells, but that is neither here nor there for me.  I am more interested in the very idea that the exposing of the arm is now considered business casual…..  Is it?

Now, for just about the first time on LAW OF FASHION, I actually did not wear this to the office.  Please do not hold it against me.  Instead, I am  offering this edgy bohemian nonsense up as a conversation starter.  Mostly because I am thinking about wearing it to work….and also because I won’t  pass up the opportunity to stretch the rules.  Because if naked arms are OK, then…….. so is this?

What do you think?  Are bare arms an office no, no…..or a yes?
